Frequently Asked Questions

We've compiled a list of a few questions that some of our clients typically ask us. If you still have questions please feel free to contact us and we'll be more than happy to get back to you promptly with an answer.

Why is it cooler in some of my rooms and warmer in others?

Your system may need to be balanced or a duct may have been disconnected from one of your air vents. It may also be something as simple as opening or closing a damper to control the airflow in a room. Call our service department to schedule an appointment.

How often should I change my filters?

Depending on the type of home you have, we recommend you change your filters once a month. We provide cases of filters in common sizes, as well as custom-made sizes.  Prices may vary.

Why is there ice on the pipes of the condenser outside?

Have you checked your filters lately? If they are caked with dirt and dust, it may be the simple solution as to what's freezing the pipes outside. Airflow is being prevented from getting into your system and causes the freon in your condenser to freeze over. If your filters aren't dirty, we may need to check your system as soon as possible. Switch your thermostat to the "off" position, the fan from "auto" to "on" and call our service department to schedule an appointment.

There is water leaking through my ceiling. Is this coming from the air-conditioner or do I have a leak in my roof?

It could be one or the other. However, don't wait to decide on who to call. We'll gladly come and check out your system and see where the leak is coming from. When running, condensation builds up in your system and your drains could possibly be clogged. Can you see water in your emergency drain pan under the machine? If so, call our service department to schedule an appointment. You can prevent this from happening if you call at the beginning of the season to have maintenance done on your system. See our service page for more information.

There is a lot of dirt and leaves in my condenser outside. Will that prevent my system from running efficiently?

Not necessarily. However, we do recommend that you have a technician clean this out when you schedule to have your systems maintained at the beginning of the season. We may also recommend a coil cleaning if there is corrosion or signs of wear on the coil. Beach residents are highly susceptible to seeing this on their condenser coils. Call to schedule a coil cleaning during the spring/summer months. Also, ask about our condenser covers that you may use during the winter months to help prevent this "wear and tear" on your systems. (Not recommended for heat-pump owners.)

My thermostat keeps changing the temperature that I had it set for. Am I pushing the right buttons?

It's possible that your thermostat may be in program mode which is a simple fix. You can call our office to speak with someone and have them walk you through changing this. However, if you feel it is not in program mode or if someone can't solve the problem over the phone for you, ask to schedule an appointment for a technician to see what the problem may be. You may be charged for a service call unless you have a contract.

Do you do duct cleaning?

No, we don't. However, we highly recommend our good friends at Z-Best Maintenance Company Inc. to do your duct cleaning. You can call them at 516-766-1492.

My condenser outside is making a very loud noise and the fan isn't turning. Should I turn it off?

YES! You may cause more damage than you would like to your system if you keep it on and running. It's possible the motor has seized up or the fan blade is broken. Call our service department to make an appointment.

Why do I smell something burning when I turn my heat on for the first time?

Your heat has been off for months and may have some dirt or dust that has settled in the system and is now being burned off as it gets hotter. This is nothing to be concerned about. However, if you see smoke coming from your air vents or from the system itself, shut off your system and call the fire department! They will get there quicker than we would but we will be more than happy to attend to the system afterwards.

When does my warranty expire? Can I purchase an extended warranty?

Most manufacturers offer a 5 year or 10 year warranty when your system has been registered on the date of its installation. If your machine was never registered, you may only get the limited warranty that comes with the system after it is installed. Most manufacturers do not offer an extended warranty after registering for the 10 year warranty. Our company does not offer extended warranties. If we install a new system for you, we honor the first year and cover all repairs or service for that system.

Why is there a moldy/musty smell when my system is running?

Some houses are damper than others and may need a little more help in keeping your home or office free of dangerous air particles. You may need to install a dehumidifier to keep the dampness down to a minimum during the winter months. For systems that develop mold, a UV light may need to be installed above the machine to keep it free and clear of those nasty mold spores. If mold isn't a problem but allergens are, you may just need an air cleaner. We have different solutions to keeping your air clean. Call our sales department to ask about these options. We may need to schedule you in for an appointment to assess the air quality in your home before making any decisions.
